In the first phase of construction (of the ground floor) the wooden pillars were left for the future enlargement of the school on a second floor. During the work the school courses remained active and for this reason it was decided to build first the loft of the first floor and then to remove the cover. The building site thus set up allowed to build the entire structure from the inside of the second floor. The walls of the second floor were made of bamboo on the outside and of wooden planks in the inside while the windows and doors were built with a wooden frame and bamboo walls All materials were found locally on place, mainly in informal neighborhoods; and also the workers employed in the construction of the iron balustrades were local artisans. The cypress wood of the supporting structure and the bamboo walls were bought from the Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI), 4 km from Mathare. We designed big classrooms, that are divisible when needed, to meet the strong need for multifunctional spaces. Currently the school hosts 240 students attending two kindergartens and 8 primary school classes. It is equipped with a kitchen and a computer lab. Beyond this the school carries out many extra curricular activities: it has set up a dressmaker for women, a talent academy; it runs basketball and football competitions; it is home to a church on Sundays. These numerous activities and the great community spirit of the local association that runs it, make the school a true civic center that is always open to the community of Mathare. The second floor was completed in 2014.
