> RAMMED EARTH TRAINING WORKSHOP
At Why Not Academy of Mathare has begun a training laboratory about rammed earth as a constructive method. The soil is mixed first with sisal fiber, then with sand and finally with lime to later on be applied in a bamboo structure that keeps the mix together and steady. Children from the slum, Liveinslums site workers, student’s families are participating curiously and enthusiastically. The goal is to build the new elementary school base and a tailoring room for the women of the slum within a few months. The “torchi” technique, already widely known locally as it has been used to build some of the houses in the slum using rammed earth armed with timber poles, has been improved with some technological solutions that refine the hygienic and thermal performance.
The Mathare community in most of the cases and in spite of the difficult access to industrial construction materials (such as concrete and metal) refuses to the idea of constructing with soil fearing the aesthetic result. But now the population is reviewing these thoughts by learning how to apply a traditional construction technique, low cost, that many members had already seen in their origin villages .
