>FOOD SECURITY IN MATHARE AND KOROGOCHO SLUMS
Food insecurity is one of the major problems that afflict the slums of Nairobi. Child malnutrition is widespread (with peaks of acute malnutrition in the poorest families), as well as chronic diarrhea and protein deficiency. A worrying Percentage of children (about 50%) undergo growth arrest. The link between hunger, malnutrition and HIV is very tight, considering that AIDS orphans are in increasing numbers. The overall goal of the project "Food security in Mathare and Korogocho slums" is to reduce poverty and social exclusion in the informal settlements of Nairobi, working on three key factors in fighting food insecurity in the cities: urban agriculture, family economy and environment. In Mathare the project includes the creation of 4 community vegetable gardens on a total area of 2,000 square meters. Two existing gardens will be enhanced with a leading fish farming project and the construction of a phyto-purification system. The first two areas have already been equipped with water supply systems. The project also includes the setting up of three breeding farms (chickens, goats, rabbits). The most vulnerable families and groups of young people are supported for a total of 250 beneficiaries, which in addition to being able to access the food also receive professional training following a structured workshop program held by agronomists and experts in zootechnics, fish farming and phyto-purification. In Korogocho the project involves the construction of a bamboo artisan workshop and the setting up of 10 agricultural products in sacks. All community groups participating in the project are networked via an info point and a series of meetings with stakeholders to discuss problems and protect projects against pollution waste..
