Liveinslums has launched an awareness campaign in the slums, in order to discuss and propose solutions regarding the problem of the numerous illegal dumps found in Mathare, and more generally in all the slums of Nairobi. A guide distributed to residents explaining how it was possible to transform a former landfill in the vegetable garden production, and informs about the consequences generated by burning the waste, contamination of soils and waters. The main objective is to discourage people from throwing solid and liquid waste into the river that washes Mathare, which floods regularly damage the crops. Since the service of transport and disposal of waste is too expensive (2,000 shillings a week), and recycling industries only buy plastic and metal, a collection system within the home has been started, by giving to the people containers that are emptied weekly by an association which manage the transportation. Each family contributes with a monthly fee of 50 shillings. The wastes are then transported to Dandora, the only public landfill of Nairobi.
